Von Ahn visits Dartmouth

Join us this Wednesday, April 29, 2009!
Moore Hall, B03 4:30pm
Tea @ 4:00 PM in the Foyer outside B03
Luis Von Ahn, a Computer Scientist at CMU, is giving a talk on “Human Computation” — harnessing human brainpower to solve problems that computers currently do not solve. Computers still do not possess the basic conceptual intelligence or perceptual capabilities that most humans take for granted. Von Ahn is working to solve large-scale computational problems and collect data to teach computers “basic human talents.” He will be showing some of his online games as a means to encourage participation in the problem solving process. This talk is cosponsored by the Computer Science Department and the Digital Arts and Humanities lecture series at Dartmouth, and is open to everyone. http://tiny.cc/digihum

Thinking Social Change? Think about Poverty.

This is from Neuroanthropology, a collaborative blog from Australia. Read from the scientific community how researchers have found concrete links between the income – achievement gaps that appear in academic environments. Yes, social disadvantage results in neurological disadvantage. As noted by Lehrer even back in 2006, “The social implications of this research are staggering. If boring environments, stressful noises, and the primate’s particular slot in the dominance hierarchy all shape the architecture of the brain—and Gould’s team has shown that they do—then the playing field isn’t level. Poverty and stress aren’t just an idea: they are an anatomy. Some brains never even have a chance.”

poverty visualization

Read about this. It matters how one is designing learning games or software for disadvantaged groups. The authors review what really matters in this discovery of a concrete link between poverty and achievement in Poverty and the Brain: Becoming Critical, April 10 2009.

Really Tiltingly Busy!

First, Play the Layoff Game. “It’s the latest craze sweeping the internet!” according to the press! Some of the press is posted below the link to the game.

Second, lab members Anna Lotko and Mary Flanagan had a wonderful time at this year’s Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco. We interviewed many game designers in our Design for Learning project, currently part of the Games for Learning Institute at NYU. Thanks to all of the designers who offered their time and ideas to the project. We will have information on this project up shortly on the site!

Third, warm thanks to City University of Hong Kong for welcoming Tiltfactor’s Mary Flanagan, who was on an invited mission to assist the School of Creative Media to develop new media and games-related teaching and learning strategies.

Now back in one piece, the new term at Dartmouth begins with a dynamic new Game Design course (FS49). Yes!  And the salon variable_d is back, Tuesdays at 4pm. Upcoming salons: Tues April 14, Free culture movement: the 4 freedoms; Tues April  28, Flashmob; Tues May 5, Social Networks and the Self.
